Why Not Start with Church or Morality?

The Church is not Christianity's founder or final authority. Jesus builds it, owns it, corrects it, and gives it His Word. Faithful churches preach the Gospel, administer baptism and the Lord's Supper, pray, practice loving discipline, care for people, and send believers to serve. They are meant to make Christ's character visible together.

Real churches are also gatherings of forgiven sinners who still need sanctification. Their failures range from ordinary selfishness to grave abuse. Scripture never excuses such evil. Jesus condemned leaders who loaded others with burdens, performed religion for applause, and neglected justice, mercy, and faithfulness (Matthew 23:1-36). Church wrongdoing therefore confirms the Bible's diagnosis of sin and violates the Lord it claims to represent.

Do not use a corrupt representative to replace the original. Read Jesus' words, measure every church by Scripture, and seek a congregation that submits to His Gospel.

God's moral law is good. It reflects His holy character, protects neighbors, exposes selfish desire, and shows what love requires. But a mirror can show dirt without washing a face. In the same way, commandments reveal sin but cannot undo it or create perfect righteousness.

Human comparison makes moral pride easy: choose a terrible example, stand beside it, and the score looks impressive. God's standard is not “better than the worst person I know.” It is wholehearted love for God and neighbor. Jesus presses the law inward to anger, lust, truthfulness, motives, and love for enemies (Matthew 5:21-48). Every person needs mercy.

The Gospel announces that sinners are put right with God through Jesus' obedience and sacrifice, received by faith—not through a successful moral résumé (Romans 3:21-26).

Starting with Jesus does not make church or obedience optional. It puts the engine before the wheels. Ephesians 2:8-10 says salvation is God's gift, not the result of works, and then says believers are created in Christ for good works. Grace rescues first and reshapes the rescued.

Jesus brings believers into one body where they learn truth, receive care, confess sin, use their gifts, and practice a love that cannot be learned alone. He also gives His Spirit so obedience becomes a response of gratitude and growing freedom rather than an attempt to purchase acceptance.

Picture two people serving a meal. One hopes every plate will earn a place in the family; the other serves because the family has already welcomed him. The outward action may look similar, but the second is Christian obedience: loved by Christ, then learning to love.

A hypocrite's failure may expose a false profession or serious disobedience, but it does not reverse Jesus' Resurrection or make His teaching false. Yes, a follower of Jesus should join a faithful local church. Christ saves people into His body, gives members gifts for one another, appoints shepherds, and commands believers to gather. This does not require trusting leaders blindly. Test teaching by Scripture, expect accountable leadership, and leave environments that protect abuse while seeking sound pastoral help.

Absolutely. Good works cannot earn justification, but living faith bears good fruit. Jesus saves people from sin, not for continued slavery to it. Obedience expresses love for Him, serves neighbors, and displays His transforming power. The foundation is acceptance in Christ; the result is a life being made holy (John 14:15; James 2:14-18).
