Jesus died as the willing substitute for sinners. The Bible explains the cross through several images because one word cannot exhaust its riches. Those images reinforce rather than replace substitution at the center.
Holy Love Acts
God does not choose between love and justice. His love does not call evil harmless, and His justice is not reluctant mercy. says God presents Christ as the atoning sacrifice so He remains just while justifying the one who has faith in Jesus.

- Example: the saving cross also becomes the pattern of self-giving love.
Victory without guilt removed would leave Satan's accusation standing. Example without substitution would inspire condemned people but not save them. The cross wins and transforms because Christ first bears sin.
Finished, Then Vindicated
“It is finished” announces completion, not exhaustion alone. Jesus has fulfilled Scripture and accomplished the work the Father gave Him. The torn temple curtain signifies access to God through His blood.
The Resurrection does not undo the cross; it reveals its success. The crucified Jesus rises as the living High Priest and Lord, applying the redemption He obtained.

Questions
Is Punishing A Substitute Unjust?
Not in the covenantal self-giving revealed in the Gospel. Is Penal Substitution Unjust? explains that the divine Son willingly assumes His people's nature and legal representation; the Father and Son act in one saving purpose; and Christ's Resurrection vindicates rather than abandons Him. This is not a judge seizing an unrelated third party.
Why Couldn't God Just Forgive?
Because righteous forgiveness cannot declare evil meaningless. Human forgiveness also absorbs cost rather than making harm vanish. At the cross, God Himself bears the cost His justice requires. Grace is free to the sinner precisely because it was infinitely costly to the Giver.
Is The Cross Child Sacrifice?
No. Jesus is the eternal Son, not a powerless child taken against His will. He says no one takes His life from Him; He lays it down and takes it up again. The triune God gives Himself for sinners. Pagan sacrifice tries to manipulate a deity; the Gospel is God graciously providing the sacrifice.
How Do I Receive Its Benefit?
Through faith alone in Christ alone. Turn from self-trust and sin, receive Jesus and His finished work, and rest your standing before God on His righteousness. The faith that receives pardon also receives a new Lord and begins bearing the fruit of gratitude.
