Knowing About God and Knowing God

The Bible values accurate knowledge. False ideas about God's character produce false worship, and a made-up Jesus cannot save. Believers need to know that God is holy and triune, that humanity has sinned, that Jesus is God the Son made man, and that He died and rose. Faith has content.

Yet bare awareness can remain personally barren. James 2:19 says demons know there is one God and tremble. Religious leaders in Jesus' day searched the Scriptures while refusing to come to the One those Scriptures revealed (John 5:39-40). Their problem was not too much truth. It was truth held at a distance while the heart rejected its Lord.

Saving knowledge receives God's testimony as true and entrusts the whole person to Christ.

Sin makes the relationship problem moral, not merely informational. We do not simply need an introduction; we need peace with the God we have resisted. Jesus creates that peace through His blood. He bears guilt, gives His righteousness, and brings believers to the Father (1 Peter 3:18).

Faith is the open hand that receives Him. It does not purchase a relationship or impress God. Joined to Christ, believers are adopted as God's children, receive the Holy Spirit, and cry, “Abba! Father!” (Galatians 4:4-7). They know God as the holy Judge who justified them, the Lord they obey, and the Father who welcomes them because of His Son.

This is why Jesus defines eternal life as knowing the Father and the Son He sent (John 17:3). Eternal life begins now as reconciled communion and reaches fullness in seeing God in the new creation.

Friendship grows through listening, speaking, shared life, and trust. God appoints corresponding means without becoming an equal-sized human friend. We listen in Scripture, answer in prayer, gather with His Church, receive baptism and the Lord's Supper, confess sin, obey His commands, and watch His faithful care over time.

These practices do not make God present; He already dwells with His people by the Spirit. They train attention and deepen communion with the God who has promised to work through them. On a dry morning, Scripture remains His Word. During a confused prayer, Christ remains the believer's intercessor. In a difficult church week, believers still belong to one body.

Knowing God also changes conduct. 1 John 2:3-6 says a claim to know Him that settles comfortably into disobedience is false. Growth is not sinless perfection, but it includes repentance, increasing love, and a life shaped by Jesus.

No. Theology describes the true God and Gospel, but salvation is in Christ Himself. A person must receive and rest on Him, not merely define justification correctly. Good theology serves faith by guarding us from false gods and false gospels; it becomes deadly only when knowledge is used to avoid repentance, trust, love, and obedience.

No. Joy, peace, grief over sin, and love for God can be genuine fruits of the Spirit, but feelings rise and fall. Assurance rests first on Christ's finished work and promises, then is strengthened by the Spirit's fruit and persevering faith. A quiet day does not cancel adoption, and an intense experience cannot excuse unbelief or disobedience.

Ask whether your hope rests on the biblical Jesus and His saving work, whether you confess Him as Lord, and whether His Spirit is producing repentance, love, and growing obedience. These are not competing tests. 1 John 5:11-13 grounds assurance in God's testimony about His Son, while the rest of the letter describes the changed life that accompanies that faith.
