What Is Sin?

Sin begins when the creature rejects the Creator's truth and makes the self the final authority. In Genesis 3, distrust leads to disobedience, hiding, blame, fractured relationships, and death. Isaiah describes the same direction as each person turning to his own way (Isaiah 53:6).

Wrong done to another person is also wrong against God because that person bears His image. David had harmed Uriah and Bathsheba, yet his confession recognized the deepest offense against God's holiness (Psalm 51:1-4).

Jesus refuses to reduce sin to public image. In Mark 7:20-23, He names evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed, deceit, envy, slander, pride, and foolishness as things that come from within.

That explains why better information alone cannot heal humanity. Actions matter, but they grow from loves and loyalties that have become disordered. People need a new heart, not merely a cleaner reputation.

Sin often advertises freedom and then becomes a master. Jesus says everyone who practices sin is its slave (John 8:34). Repeated pride, lust, greed, bitterness, or deceit trains desire until the person obeys what once seemed like a choice.

Scripture also treats sin as guilt before a just Judge and separation from the source of life. "The wages of sin is death" (Romans 6:23) describes both the earned judgment and the ruin sin produces.

The diagnosis is universal but not flattening. All have sinned (Romans 3:23), yet not every act causes equal earthly damage. Universal guilt means no one can stand before God by comparison with someone worse.

God does not rescue sinners by pretending evil carries no cost. Jesus bore sins in His body on the cross so that His people might die to sin and live to righteousness (1 Peter 2:24). His sacrifice meets guilt; His Resurrection breaks death's claim; His Spirit begins a new life of obedience.

Confession agrees with God's truth instead of hiding. Repentance turns from sin toward Him. Faith receives Christ rather than presenting self-improvement as payment.

The Gospel is greater than the diagnosis: in Jesus there is pardon for guilt, freedom from sin's rule, and reconciliation with God.

No. A mistake can happen without moral rebellion, but sin involves guilt because it rejects what God commands and harms what He loves. Ignorance can affect responsibility, yet calling deliberate deceit, abuse, or hatred a mistake would hide the moral reality Scripture brings into the light.

All sin makes a person guilty and unable to save himself, but Scripture recognizes greater knowledge, greater intention, and greater harm. Murder and a proud thought are not identical in earthly consequence. Both reveal the need for grace; they do not deserve to be treated as though they wound others in the same way.

It can be abused by people, but abuse does not make the biblical diagnosis false. Scripture applies sin first to the speaker, exposes leaders who exploit others, and places every human authority under God's judgment. True conviction does not trap a person under another human; it brings sin into God's light and leads to freedom in Christ.

Yes. Everyone who confesses and trusts Christ receives cleansing because His sacrifice is sufficient, not because the past was small (1 John 1:7-9). Forgiveness does not erase every earthly consequence or remove the duty to make restitution where possible. It removes condemnation before God and begins a changed life.
