What Science Can and Cannot Test
Distinguish direct observation, repeatable experiment, historical reconstruction, and worldview claims so scientific conclusions stay within their evidence.
Summary
Science can measure physical features, test repeatable relationships, compare explanations, and infer past events from surviving evidence. Its conclusions are strongest when samples are representative, methods transparent, results reproducible, and claims no broader than the data. Science cannot experimentally prove that only matter exists, settle moral duties, supply life's ultimate meaning, or forbid God from acting. Those are philosophical and theological questions. Knowing the boundary protects both honest research and clear Christian reasoning.
A Powerful Method with Defined Boundaries
“Science” can refer to observations, a disciplined process, a model, a community, or a worldview. Good reasoning identifies which meaning is doing the work.
Start with What Was Actually Observed
An observation reports something measured or documented: a spectral line appears at a wavelength, a sample contains certain isotopes, a population's trait frequency changes, or a medicine produced a different outcome in a controlled group. Even here, quality depends on calibrated instruments, suitable controls, enough observations, representative sampling, transparent cleaning, and results that other teams can check.
The conclusion must match the measurement. A result from one tissue, location, species, time span, or laboratory does not automatically describe every tissue, location, species, age, or condition. Repetition using the same dataset is additional analysis, not an independent sample. These basic checks are pro-science because they keep confidence tied to what the method can establish.
Repeatable Experiments Test Regular Processes
Experimental science manipulates variables under controlled conditions and looks for repeatable effects. It is especially powerful for processes operating now: chemistry, mechanics, physiology, electricity, or heredity within observed populations. A good hypothesis risks failure, states what evidence would count, and survives attempts at replication.
This work maps regularities in creation. Scripture expects a world with dependable order because God faithfully sustains it (; ). Discovering a mechanism does not make God unnecessary. It explains how part of His ordinary providence operates. The scientist can describe the pressure, temperature, and condensation involved in rain while Scripture truthfully says God gives rain.
Past Events Require Historical Inference
No method reruns yesterday. Historical sciences compare surviving traces with known causal processes and construct the explanation that best connects them. This is legitimate reasoning, also used in archaeology and forensic investigation. Its strength depends on preservation, starting conditions, rate assumptions, causal adequacy, and whether alternative histories predict the same traces.
A measured isotope ratio is an observation; an age attaches a model of initial quantities, system closure, decay behavior, and history. A genetic similarity is an observation; a proposed ancestral tree adds alignment methods, mutation models, selection assumptions, and a history. This distinction does not make every reconstruction wrong. It prevents the reconstruction from masquerading as the observation itself, especially when unique beginnings cannot be watched or repeated.
A Method's Boundary Is Not a Verdict on God
Major scientific institutions generally define scientific explanations in terms of natural processes that can be tested against the natural world. That boundary makes laboratory cooperation possible among people with different beliefs. It also means the method will return a natural account whenever it returns an account at all. The method cannot then be used circularly: “Only natural causes were allowed; only natural causes appear in the model; therefore only natural causes exist.”
God is not a physical variable inside a sealed box. Questions about why anything exists, why rational laws hold, whether objective moral duties are real, or whether a unique miracle occurred require philosophy, history, moral reasoning, and revelation alongside physical evidence. Science may examine a miracle's claimed effects—an empty tomb, a healed body, testimony, timing—but it cannot place the sovereign Creator under laboratory control.

Questions
Can Science Eventually Explain Everything?
No. More complete physical descriptions would still not establish why a world exists, why logical inference is valid, what anyone morally ought to do, or what life is for. Those are not temporary gaps waiting for a larger microscope. They are different kinds of questions. God's revelation supplies the personal, moral, and ultimate foundation within which physical explanations have meaning.
Can Science Investigate a Miracle Claim?
Yes, it can investigate physical traces and test ordinary alternative causes, but it cannot demand repeatability from a unique historical act or rule out divine agency by definition. The Resurrection case, for example, uses testimony, the empty tomb, appearances, transformed witnesses, and the event's Jewish context. Historical inference asks what best explains those facts; a laboratory cannot order Jesus to rise again.
Does Consensus Make a Claim Certain?
No. Consensus summarizes the current judgment of many qualified workers and deserves accurate understanding, but its force still comes from data, methods, assumptions, and explanatory success. It is strongest for repeatedly tested present processes and less direct for unique unobserved beginnings. Christians should neither dismiss a claim by label nor treat a head count as revelation above God's Word.
