No Other Gods

The command begins one verse before the prohibition: “I am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt” (Exodus 20:2). Israel had seen the Lord break Egypt's power, carry His people through the sea, and provide for them in the wilderness. The gods of Egypt had not saved them. The living God had.

That rescue makes His claim personal without making it private. The LORD is Israel's covenant God, but He is also the Maker of heaven and earth. He deserves the worship of every nation because every breath, every good gift, and salvation itself comes from Him.

This command comes first because every other command depends on who God is. “Before me” does not mean people may keep smaller gods as long as the LORD ranks highest. Nothing exists outside His presence. He forbids every rival in His sight.

On Mount Carmel, Elijah asked Israel, “How long halt ye between two opinions?” (1 Kings 18:21). The prophets of Baal cried for hours, but no one answered. Then the LORD answered Elijah with fire, and the people confessed, “The LORD, he is the God.”

The scene is memorable because divided worship always makes an empty promise. False gods cannot hear prayer, forgive sin, raise the dead, or reconcile anyone to God. The Lord does not need to compete for a place beside them. He exposes them as powerless and calls His people home.

The first commandment does not leave room for a vague belief in “something higher.” 1 Corinthians 8:4-6 rejects idols and confesses one God, the Father, and one Lord, Jesus Christ. The New Testament places Jesus within the identity and worship of the one true God.
