Difficult Old Testament Ethics

Hard Old Testament laws and judgments become clearer through context, covenant, genre, progressive redemptive history, and God's unchanging holiness.

Summary

The Old Testament's difficult passages do not reveal a defective God. They record His holy government of a fallen world, including unique judgments, civil regulation for ancient Israel, patient restraint of entrenched evil, and protections unusual in surrounding cultures. Read each text by its words, covenant audience, ancient setting, and place in redemption. The God who judges Canaan also judges Israel; the Jesus who gives His life also warns of final judgment. Holiness and mercy never changed.

The Same Holy God Across The Whole Bible

Short accusations often combine unlike texts. Good answers slow down and ask what each passage actually commands, permits, narrates, or condemns.

Separate Moral, Civil, Ceremonial, And Narrative Material

Narrative may report polygamy, abuse, or deceit without approving it; consequences often expose the sin. Israel's civil case laws governed a specific covenant nation. Ceremonial laws marked holiness and anticipated Christ. God's moral character remains, while the new-covenant church is not ancient Israel's territorial state.

Confusing categories turns a unique conquest judgment into a modern war policy or a regulated fallen institution into an ideal.

Ancient Context Clarifies Without Controlling Scripture

Words translated slave, servant, take, or hate can carry ranges unlike today's first association. Comparison with surrounding law reveals what a rule restrained or protected. Yet culture is not the final standard; God's own explanation is.

Does the Bible Support Slavery? distinguishes debt service, war captivity, and criminal manstealing. Does the Bible Oppress Women? distinguishes equal image-bearing dignity from identical roles.

The Creator Has Authority To Judge

Every life already belongs to God, and death is the judicial consequence of sin. He may end earthly life through disease, disaster, civil authority, or a specially commissioned nation without committing murder. Murder is unauthorized human killing; divine judgment comes from life's rightful Lord.

Canaan and Divine Judgment shows that the conquest was delayed, morally grounded, geographically limited, and never based on racial superiority.

Jesus Reveals The Same God

The Old Testament abounds in compassion and patience (), while the New Testament culminates in final wrath (). Jesus cleansed the temple, condemned hypocrisy, and spoke often of hell. He also fulfilled the sacrificial system and bore judgment at the cross.

The contrast is not harsh Father versus gentle Son. Father and Son act together in creation, salvation, and judgment. The cross is history's strongest display of both love and holiness.

Questions
Are Christians Explaining Away Plain Immorality?

They should not. The task is to identify the act accurately and evaluate it within the whole text. If an objection assumes God lacks authority to judge, that premise needs defense. If it equates every ancient servant with kidnapped race slavery or every role distinction with inferior worth, the category itself is false.

Did Jesus Correct The Old Testament God?

No. Jesus treated the Old Testament as God's unbreakable Word, named its God as His Father, and said Scripture testifies about Him. He corrected human misreadings and traditions, fulfilled shadows, and inaugurated the promised new covenant. Fulfillment is continuity reaching its goal, not a morally better Son overturning a worse Father.

May A Modern Nation Copy Israel's Penalties?

No nation today holds Israel's unique Mosaic covenant, land grant, priesthood, and directly revealed conquest commission. Governments still owe justice under God's moral order, but church and state are not a recreated theocracy. The church advances by Word, prayer, service, and discipline—not holy war ().
