Why Sexual Purity Matters
Sexual purity aligns desire, imagination, speech, and conduct with love for God, neighbor, covenant, and the body Christ will raise.
Summary
Sexual purity matters because bodies, desires, promises, and people matter to God. Chastity is the virtue of ordering sexuality under His design: exclusive faithfulness within marriage and abstinence outside it, extending to imagination, speech, media, and conduct. Purity protects love from becoming consumption, honors another person's dignity, keeps covenant, and treats the body as belonging to Christ. It is practiced by grace and self-control, not earned as a spotless identity.
Chastity Is Love With Integrity
Purity is not disgust toward sex. It is wholehearted love refusing to use a good gift against its Giver and neighbor.
Chastity Reaches The Whole Person
Jesus brings adultery into the heart by addressing lustful looking (). Desire becomes sinful when it turns another person into an object for imagined possession. Words, images, secret messages, and habits can train that gaze even without physical contact.
Chastity therefore includes what a person watches, rehearses, jokes about, and cultivates. It does not require panic at involuntary awareness or temptation. Temptation must be resisted; chosen fantasy and pursuit must be confessed.
Purity Protects Love And Covenant
Sexual sin joins bodily intimacy to secrecy, impermanence, or betrayal. Pornography commercializes exposure, invites desire toward people outside covenant, and trains concealment. Adultery violates vows. Premarital sex takes the one-flesh act without the public one-life promise.
God's command applies equally to men and women, married and single, leaders and members. No appeal to loneliness, attraction, status, or a spouse's failure makes exploitation or betrayal holy.
Practice Flight And Faithfulness
Paul says to flee sexual immorality (). Flight is concrete:
- remove private access that repeatedly feeds sin;
- tell a mature and trustworthy believer the truth;
- establish device, place, and relationship boundaries;
- refuse flirtation that undermines covenant;
- fill time with worship, work, exercise, service, sleep, and real community;
- learn to see people as image-bearers rather than bodies for use.
Rules alone cannot change the heart, but wise boundaries serve repentance. The deeper power is union with Christ and the Spirit's fruit of self-control. Grace After Sexual Sin explains what to do after failure.
Purity does not say the body is dirty. It says the body is too valuable to be ruled by appetite.

Questions
What About Harmful Purity Culture?
Shame, double standards, fear of the body, victim-blaming, and treating a sexual past as permanent defilement are sinful distortions. They do not refute chastity; they violate it by failing to love truthfully. Biblical purity honors bodies, applies one standard to all, condemns coercion, and centers cleansing in Christ rather than a human record.
Is Temptation Itself Sin?
Not every unchosen awareness or intrusive thought is a completed sin. Jesus was tempted without sin. Sin develops when the will welcomes, cultivates, or acts on a desire contrary to God. Respond early by turning attention, praying, leaving danger, and choosing a faithful action.
Does Purity Matter In Marriage?
Yes. Marriage permits sexual union with one's spouse; it does not sanctify selfishness, pressure, humiliation, pornography, or infidelity. Married purity seeks mutual good, honor, patience, exclusivity, and willing intimacy under love.
What If I Have Failed?
Come into the light now. Confess to God, end the sinful access or relationship, seek accountable help, disclose betrayal to those who have a right to truth with wise pastoral guidance, and trust Christ's sufficient blood. Purity after failure is real holiness produced by grace, not denial of the past.
