Sin wounds marriages, but Jesus supplies forgiveness and transforming grace. Marriage is honorable, while faithful singleness is also a good calling under Christ.
One Man, One Woman, One Faithful Union
Marriage does not begin with a government, a church tradition, or private romance. It begins with God's act in creation.
The Creation Pattern
God made humanity male and female, formed the woman as a fitting counterpart to the man, and established the pattern: a man leaves father and mother, holds fast to his wife, and the two become one flesh (). Difference and equal image-bearing dignity belong together.
Jesus treats this text as God's continuing design, not a temporary custom. He joins “male and female” to “the two shall become one flesh” and says what God has joined must not be separated ().
The Goods God Gives
Marriage creates a new primary human household and a durable place for shared life. Its goods include:
- companionship and mutual help;
- exclusive sexual intimacy protected by covenant;
- children and intergenerational discipleship when God grants them;
- material, emotional, and spiritual service;
- growth through patience, truth, repentance, and forgiveness;
- a public witness to promise-keeping love.
Infertility does not make a marriage less real, and singleness does not make a Christian incomplete. Procreation is a God-given good of the institution without being a test every particular marriage can fulfill.
A Picture Under Christ
Ephesians 5 places husband and wife under the lordship of Jesus. The husband is commanded to love sacrificially after Christ, not dominate for selfish advantage. The wife is called to willing respect under Christ, never to cooperate with sin. Both belong first to the Lord and must treat one another as fellow heirs of grace.
Marriage pictures Christ and the church but does not replace Him. A spouse cannot save, satisfy every need, or carry ultimate identity. Love, Faithfulness, And Forgiveness explains the daily pattern of covenant love.
Abuse, coercion, adultery, and abandonment violate marriage rather than express biblical authority. Protection, church discipline, civil justice, and, where Scripture permits, divorce must be considered with truthful pastoral and legal help.

Questions
Did Society Invent Marriage?
No. Is Marriage Only A Social Contract? shows that societies recognize and regulate marriage because a prior created reality exists. Law can protect or distort the institution, but it cannot change the male-female one-flesh design Jesus attributes to God.
Is Singleness Second Best?
No. Jesus was single, and Paul calls singleness a gift that can enable undivided service (). Marriage and singleness are different callings within this age. Neither grants superior worth, and both must be lived in holiness and Christian community.
Do Biblical Roles Permit Control?
No. Christlike headship means costly service aimed at a wife's holiness and good, never coercion, intimidation, isolation, or violence. Every authority remains under God's commands and judgment. A wife obeys Christ above any human and should seek help when pressured toward sin or danger.
What If A Marriage Is Broken?
Bring the truth into safe, wise light. Ordinary conflict calls for repentance, forgiveness, counsel, and changed behavior. Abuse or credible danger requires protection and appropriate authorities, not a rushed joint counseling session. Scripture permits divorce in defined covenant-breaking circumstances; difficult cases deserve careful pastoral counsel faithful to the text.
