Children Are a Gift from God

Every child bears God's image and is entrusted to adults for protection, nurture, truth, and loving guidance rather than possession or performance.

Summary

Children are a gift from God because each is a living image-bearer entrusted to adults for protection, nurture, truth, and love. Their worth does not depend on health, intelligence, temperament, ability, or a parent's plans. Parents are stewards rather than owners and must prepare children to live faithfully before God. The gift can bring joy, costly work, and sorrow together. Infertility is painful, while childlessness never makes a person less valuable or less useful to Christ.

Lives To Receive, Protect, And Shepherd

Calling children a gift does not mean parenting is easy or every circumstance of conception is free from grief. It identifies the child's source and worth.

Worth Given By The Creator

Psalm 127 calls children a heritage from the Lord (). Psalm 139 describes God's knowledge and formation of life in the womb (). Each child's dignity therefore precedes achievement and other people's approval.

This truth protects children with disabilities, children conceived in violence, foster children, adopted children, and children whose arrival disrupts human plans. Another person's sin may shape the circumstances; it does not make the child a sin or a lesser person.

Parents Are Stewards, Not Owners

Parents receive real authority to provide, teach, protect, and correct. The authority is temporary and delegated. A child belongs finally to God and is growing toward responsible life before Him, not lifelong dependence on parental control.

Stewardship asks what serves the child's holiness and good rather than what protects adult image. It welcomes questions, admits parental wrong, distinguishes immaturity from defiance, and adjusts expectations to the child's age and needs.

Jesus Welcomes And Defends Children

Jesus rebuked disciples who treated children as interruptions and received them openly (). He also spoke severe warnings about causing little ones to stumble (). The church must therefore make room for children and maintain serious safeguards against abuse.

Raising Children In The Lord describes parental discipleship. The church shares a supporting role through teaching, worship, friendship, practical help, and accountability without replacing parents or shielding wrongdoing.

Infertility and childlessness deserve tender speech. Children are gifts, not wages God owes to sufficiently faithful adults. Christ gives every believer a complete place in His family and meaningful ways to nurture the next generation.

A child is not a parent's project for self-fulfillment. A child is a neighbor made in God's image and placed close enough to love every day.

Questions
What If Parenting Feels Mostly Hard?

Difficulty does not cancel gift. A valuable calling can require exhausting service, especially with illness, disability, trauma, or limited support. Tell the truth about the burden, ask the church for concrete help, seek qualified care, and receive rest without guilt. The child and parent both need grace.

Does Infertility Mean God's Displeasure?

No. Scripture records faithful people who endured infertility and never treats fertility as a reliable measure of God's favor. Grief is fitting, and prayer is welcome. No promised technique obligates God to give a child. In Christ, childless believers possess full adoption and lasting fruitfulness in His kingdom.

What About Adoption And Foster Care?

They can be beautiful forms of neighbor-love and family, but no family should enter them romantically or without preparation. Children may bring real loss and trauma. Seek training, honest assessment, community support, lawful process, and care centered on the child's good rather than an adult's rescue identity.

Can Parents Save Their Children?

No. Parents can teach, model, pray, correct, and bring children under the means of grace, but the Holy Spirit gives new birth. That truth removes both control and despair. Parents should be faithful and hopeful while entrusting the child's heart to God.
