Is Communion Only a Symbol?

The bread and cup are signs, but the Holy Spirit uses Christ's appointed meal for real fellowship, assurance, nourishment, and unity.

Summary

Communion is symbolic, but it is not only symbolic. The bread and cup remain created signs that point to Christ's body and blood; the risen Jesus is bodily in heaven. Yet by the Holy Spirit, believers truly fellowship with Christ and receive spiritual nourishment as they eat and drink in faith. The meal neither changes elements by priestly power nor repeats the sacrifice. It is Christ's effective promise joined to His appointed signs.

A Sign With Real Spiritual Fellowship

Scripture protects the Supper from two reductions: material magic and empty recollection.

Paul Names Real Participation

calls the cup and bread a participation in Christ's blood and body. Paul then compares pagan sacrificial meals, where eating expressed real fellowship with an altar. His warning has force because the Lord's Table is genuine covenant communion.

The sharing is spiritual, not imaginary. The Holy Spirit unites believers to the living Christ and makes the gospel promise present to faith.

Distinguish Sign And Reality

Jesus often speaks sacramentally and figuratively: He is the door, vine, and bread of life. At the Table, He gives bread and calls it His body, using the sign's name for the reality it represents. Paul still calls it bread after consecration ().

Faith does not climb into heaven or pull Christ's body onto many tables. The Spirit joins believers on earth to the whole Christ in heaven.
Never Repeat The Sacrifice

and contrast Christ's once-for-all offering with repeated priestly sacrifices. Any account of Communion that presents Christ as repeatedly offered for sin contradicts the finality Scripture celebrates.

The Church proclaims the death already accomplished and receives its benefits with thanksgiving. "Eucharist" means thanksgiving, a fitting response to a finished gift.

Questions
What About 'This Is My Body'?

Jesus truly gives the sign of His body, and Scripture often names signs by what they signify. The apostles continue to call the element bread, while Christ's human body ascends to heaven. The words require reverent faith, not a change of substance the text never describes.

Is Remembering Too Weak?

Biblical remembrance is active covenant proclamation, not a faint mental recall. The Spirit uses the remembered gospel, visible signs, gathered body, and Christ's promise to strengthen faith. Remembrance and real nourishment are partners.

Who Receives The Benefit?

Those who receive Christ by faith. Unbelieving or careless eating receives bread and cup without the saving reality and may bring judgment (). The power is Christ's promise applied by the Spirit, not an automatic property of the elements.
