2026 Arizona Paper
A 2026 microscopy study revisited two retained Arizona fragments but performed no new carbon dating, sampled no new location, and did not repair the failures of the 1988 test.
Summary
The 2026 Arizona paper adds no new dating evidence. It performed no radiocarbon test, removed no new sample, and examined no location away from the old carbon-dating corner. Its authors found no cotton or visible repair in two retained Arizona fragments under their microscopy methods. Those honest observations apply to A1A and A1B; they cannot characterize the pieces consumed in 1988, erase different attributed-region chemistry, repair the raw-data heterogeneity, or turn one corner into a whole-cloth test.
Same Corner, No New Date
The paper asks a useful but narrow question: what can microscopy reveal about two archived siblings from Arizona's original corner allocation? Its answer must remain within that scope.
Archived Pieces, Same Corner
The study examined retained fragments A1A and A1B. Arizona's A1C and A1D pieces had been consumed during the original radiocarbon work, so the authors could not inspect the exact material that produced Arizona's measurements. The retained pieces also had not undergone all the cleaning and preparation applied to the consumed pieces.
No new material was removed from the Shroud. No separate main-body location was physically compared, and no Oxford or Zurich portion was examined. The study therefore supplies information about two preserved Arizona fragments from the same disputed corner, not an independent test of the whole linen.
Microscopy, Not Radiocarbon
The authors used digital and polarized-light microscopy on material from both fragments and specifically looked for cotton. They reported none in A1A or A1B and saw no textile structure they interpreted as a repair. Scanning electron microscopy covered only about 2 by 1.5 millimeters of A1A; A1B received no SEM sampling.
Those observations deserve to be reported exactly. They do not cover the complete strip, the consumed Arizona material, or either other laboratory's portion. The study did not repeat the chemical tests that reported gum, dye, and mordant on other threads attributed to the sampling region, nor did it apply the earlier pyrolysis comparison to A1A and A1B. A negative microscopy result in two fragments and a positive chemical result in different attributed threads are not the same experiment on the same material.
The paper itself acknowledges that small, potentially non-uniform fragments may differ from other samples. Its findings narrow what can be claimed about A1A and A1B; they cannot erase observations outside those pieces.
Why It Changes Nothing
The paper supplied no new carbon-14 measurement and no representative sample from another part of the cloth. It did not make the 1988 measurements homogeneous, remove their allocation-dependent position trends, or convert one sampling site into a test of the entire Shroud. Comparing archived pieces with published textile descriptions is not an independent physical comparison with main-cloth linen.
The authors' conclusion that their two fragments show no repair under the methods used can be true while the larger whole-cloth conclusion still fails. The same-corner study adds no age evidence and cannot validate the 1988 generalization. The Shroud's image, blood, wounds, ancient history, geographic context, and physical-aging evidence continue to converge on the burial cloth of Jesus.

Did It Disprove The Repair?
No. It reported no signs of repair in A1A and A1B under the methods used. It did not examine the full strip, the consumed Arizona pieces, or Oxford and Zurich material, and it did not repeat the gum, dye, mordant, and pyrolysis analyses on its fragments. The result weighs against repair within the inspected material; it cannot disprove repair or foreign material across a potentially non-uniform sampling region.
Was The Shroud Redated?
No. There was no new radiocarbon measurement and no new sample from the Shroud. The study returned to two retained pieces from the same Arizona corner allocation used in 1988. It contributes textile observations, not independent age evidence.
Did It Validate The 1988 Test?
No. It did not correct the single-site sampling design, make the released measurements homogeneous, or physically test whether the corner represented the main linen. Reexamining siblings from the same allocation cannot validate the premise on which the whole-cloth date depended.
Does It Change The Conclusion?
